Your garden doesn’t need a winter break!
It is absolutely possible to harvest fresh, nutritious, and regional vegetables from your own garden even during the winter months! With a bit of foresight and planning, you can already start preparing in spring for your own winter harvest.
While winter may not be the main growing season, it is nonetheless a crucial harvest period! Professional growers, direct marketers, and vegetable box producers also benefit from the concept of year-round gardening. Alongside classic storage crops, fresh greens such as Asian salad greens, wasabi arugula, a variety of lettuces, turnips, peas, Swiss chard, and many others can bring colour and diversity to winter market stalls. This abundance of winter crops makes a significant difference compared to competitors and strengthens customer loyalty.
Since 2023, in cooperation with garden expert DI Wolfgang Palme, we have provided a comprehensive guide that serves as a year-round self-sufficiency manual. It includes all suitable varieties from the extensive ReinSaat range of over 800 varieties that are ideal for harvesting during the cold season. We also reveal the secret of optimal sowing times. With staggered sowings — whether in protected polytunnels, under cold frames, in open fields, or even on your windowsill — energy-intensive imports can be avoided, and food quality significantly improved, year after year.
Look for the snowflake!
All our varieties suitable for winter harvesting are clearly marked with a snowflake symbol in the extensive ReinSaat main catalogue. You can find further cultivation and care instructions in our newly updated Year-Round Gardening brochure.
